MOGA – Incidents of sacrilege of holy books continue unabated with reports of burnt and damaged pages of Sikh and Hindu scriptures having been found from a canal near Kachha Ghal Kalan road on the outskirts of Moga city on Wednesday evening, police sources said today.

Local officials of the police and representatives of both the communities reached the spot after knowing about the incident and took the burnt and damaged religious scriptures in their safe custody.

Officials of the civil and police departments were of the view that it was a handiwork of anti-social elements and aimed at disturbing peace in the state.

Two separate criminal cases under Sections 505 and 295A of the IPC have been registered at the police station (rural) in Moga city.

Mahinder Singh, ‘granthi’ of Baba Mal Singh Gurudwara, Ghal Kalan village, in a statement before the police said that two children (aged 9-10 years) were seen carrying ‘Sukhmani Sahib’.

A local resident, Gurlabh Singh, took the book from them and handed it over to the ‘granthi’ who found that some pages were burnt and missing.

He, along with local residents, launched a hunt to find out the missing pages. They found that these in a nearby dry water channel.

In another incident in the same area, few Hindu religious books were found damaged (torn and burnt) on a link road on the outskirts of Ghal Kalan village, police sources said.

A great deal of resentment prevailed among both the communities, but the situation was under control.
