Prominent Engineer Dr. Mohan Mathur Appointed To Order Of Canada

LONDON – A leading Indo-Canadian engineer Dr. R. Mohan Mathur has been appointed as a Member to the Order of Canada. The announcement of Mathur and 119 other Canadians honoured with the Order of Canada by made by Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada, last Friday.

Another South Asian was also honoured with the Order. Rogers Communications Inc. President/CEO Nadir H. Mohamed was recognized for his leadership in the telecommunications industry, and for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in Canada.

The Order honours people whose service shapes our society; whose innovations ignite our imaginations; and whose compassion unites our communities. The Order is one of Canada’s highest honours.

Mathur, who’s son Tinu Mathur was a manager at the LINK newspaper in the 1990s, was invested for his excellence and contributions in the fields of Engineering and academia. They have had a profound influence in Canada and as part of Canada’s leadership internationally.

Arriving in Winnipeg in the winter of 1969 as an immigrant to this great land, this IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) graduate’s journey has been remarkable as a catalyst of thought leadership and change underpinned with his strong work ethic.

Now, half a century later he gracefully reflects on a career that has culminated in this nation’s greatest recognition.

“It is a tremendous honour to be in such esteemed company among Canada’s noteworthy citizens,” Mathur said. “I am humbled and share this respect with those who have supported me in all my endeavours”.

Mathur has been a pioneer in the fields of electric transmission, nuclear power and Engineering education.

“As Dean of Engineering at Western University, Mohan’s initiatives led the Faculty to becoming one of Canada’s premier engineering schools. His research at the University of Manitoba resulted in the improvement of hydroelectric transmission and he was honored by the Canadian Nuclear Association for his efforts in nuclear training,” said John M. Thompson O.C., Chancellor Emeritus, University of Western Ontario and former CEO IBM Canada. “Mohan’s contributions to Canada are noteworthy and his investiture in the Order of Canada richly deserved.”

Mathur has also led recently as Chair, London Hydro, CEO and founding member of UNENE (University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering), and member of over 15 boards in industry and education. He also served with the United Nations and CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency).

Mathur joins 120 prominent Canadians including former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Academy Award winning Director James Cameron and Nobel Prize winning physicist Donna Strickland among others. They will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held at a later date.
