Accused in a housing project scam Devinder Gill and his wife Kricspy Gill at a press conference in Chandigarh on Tuesday.

CHANDIGARH – Devinder Singh Gill, accused of duping police officers and doctors in the alleged multi-crore Sky Height Housing Project scam, today claimed that suspended Inspector-General (IG) Gautam Cheema and three others were involved in money-laundering and hawala transactions.

Appearing before the media for the first time after he was booked by the CBI in 2011 for taking a bribe for the housing project besides facing several cases for forgery, cheating and rape, Gill claimed it was Cheema who had cheated him and owed him more than Rs 20 crore.

“He conspired with former Defence Accounts officer Ajay Chaudhry, a woman friend and two Delhi-based bookies to cheat me of my money in the Sky Height Project and the Omega Housing Project. He kidnapped me and later got me implicated in one case after another as I had demanded my money back,” Gill claimed.

Denying the allegations, Cheema said he would welcome any probe against him, “Devinder Gill and his wife had levelled several allegations against me which were found not true. I am open to any further probe.”

Gill said he was committed to the Sky Height Housing Project and would ensure its success. He claimed the 14 persons had already got registration papers for their land and only Yashpal Gupta and Ajay Gupta, who had lodged FIRs against him, were yet to get their papers. He said he was willing to pay them as per the sale deed agreement.

Gill, who was accompanied by his wife Kricpy Khera and a battery of lawyers, claimed: “I am the adopted son of Mehraj Singh Gill. I don’t want to talk much about my personal life.”

He said he was an emotional person who had placed his trust in wrong persons. “My life was saved as one of the kidnappers hired by Gautam recognised me. I had given him Rs 2,000 for a meal. I have made money through hard work and through business deals. I have invested Rs10 crore in the land for the housing project and I have paid Rs 3 crore as income tax,” he said.

He objected to the term conman being used by the media for him. “I am no conman. I have not committed any fraud. There were 30 investors of which 14 have got land ownership papers,” Gill said.
