The British Columbia Provincial & Canadian National UCMAS Mental Math Competition, witnessed an outstanding display of mental math skills by students across the province. According to a release by USMAC, BC students outshone the national average, with an impressive 52% of participants demonstrating their mathematical prowess compared to the national average of 30%.
With over 4,200 students between the ages of 5 and 15 competing from various regions across Canada, the UCMAS Mental Math Competition showcased the remarkable abilities of young minds in the field of mental arithmetic. The competition comprised three distinct parts: the Visual competition, the Listening competition, and the Flash competition.
The award ceremony, held at the prestigious Bonsor Recreation Complex in Burnaby on June 17, 2023, was a glittering event that celebrated the exceptional performance of the students. Parents, teachers, and students were present to share the stage and bask in the glory of their accomplishments.
One of the highlights of the event was the graduation of 35 students from the UCMAS program. These remarkable individuals achieved the esteemed Baccalaureate degree, the highest level of mental math proficiency attainable within the UCMAS program. Their dedication and hard work have propelled them to the forefront of mental math excellence.
The UCMAS program, which stands for Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System, is an innovative educational program designed to enhance children’s mental math abilities and overall cognitive development, USMAS informs. “Through its structured curriculum and unique teaching methods, UCMAS empowers students to sharpen their mental arithmetic skills, improve concentration, boost memory, and enhance problem-solving capabilities,” the release said.
The program’s success is evident in the exceptional performance of the BC students at the UCMAS Mental Math Competition. By surpassing the national average, these young mathematicians have demonstrated the effectiveness of UCMAS in nurturing mathematical talents and achieving academic excellence.
