FARIDKOT – The arrest of a lawyer for the alleged offence of “hurting the religious feelings” of Faridkot MP Paramjit Kaur Gulshan triggered a protest by advocates in Faridkot.

The police arrested advocate Jagdeep Singh Bajwa for allegedly sending a “sarcastic” SMS on the mobile of Gulshan’s daughter on April 24. Though the police had registered the case against an unknown person on the complaint of the MP the same day, the accused was arrested this evening.

The police has arrested the advocate for allegedly hurting the religious feelings of the MP. However, on April 24 in the FIR, the accused was booked under Section 66 A of the Information and Technology Act and Section 125 of the Representation of People Act for sending an “offensive and menacing character message” to the sitting MP and promoting enmity between classes in connection with the elections. Both these offences are bailable.

However, Tuesday the police arrested the advocate under Section 295A of the IPC, which is a serious and a non-bailable crime and Bajwa was sent to the police lockup.

Sat Pal, the investigation officer, said the police added Section 295A in the FIR after investigating into the case.
