LANGLEY – Satinder Singh, a 32-year old Surrey bank employee, will represent the BC Conservatives in Surrey-Newton in the provincial general election scheduled for May.

Singh is the second turbaned Sikh to seek the seat after the BC Liberals nominated lawyer Sukhminder Virk as their candidate for the NDP dominated seat. Both “Sings” will have to work extremely hard to unseat NDP incumbent Harry Bains, who won by one of the largest margins in the previous election.

“Satinder is emblematic of the bright, young and energetic candidates we are recruiting to our party in advance of the May 14, 2013 general election,” said John Cummins, leader of the BC Conservatives.

“Surrey-Newton residents will have a strong voice in the Legislative Assembly when they elect Satinder as their MLA.”

Born in Amritsar, India, Satinder emigrated to Canada when he was 14. He initially pursued a nautical career, joining the merchant marine in 1998, and later he earned a diploma in Nautical Sciences at the Pacific Marine Training Institute.

Later still he obtained a degree in Maritime Studies at Memorial University in Newfoundland, and he currently holds the designation of Master Mariner.

Marriage and fatherhood caused Satinder to reconsider his vocational opportunities, and he subsequently undertook studies in real estate, banking and mutual funds. He currently works with TD Canada Trust in Surrey.

Fluent in three languages – English, Punjabi and Hindi – Satinder is married to Jasmine. Together they have a two-and-a-half year-old daughter, Mannrohini.
