SURREY – An Indo-Canadian man from Surrey is facing charges in connection with a brazen daytime shooting at Mr. Lube in Coquitlam last September.

On Sept. 28, 2011, the suspect Sukhdeep Singh Poony allegedly targeted the victim, another Indo-Canadian man well known for running with gangs, shooting him multiple times outside the Mr. Lube on Barnet Highway. No bystanders were hurt but the victim suffered serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. Poony allegedly fled the scene.

The Coquitlam RCMP Major Crime Section initiated an attempted murder investigation, with Poony now in custody and facing charges.

“Investigators executed a number of search warrants, with the latest one involving the search of a residence in Surrey,” said Cpl. Jamie Chung in a release. “The good work done by members of the entire Coquitlam RCMP Plainclothes Section, the Prolific Target Team, the Forensic Identification Section and the RCMP Forensic Lab over the past six months allowed us to bring this individual to justice.”

Poony, a 27-year-old Surrey man, faces six charges, including: attempted murder using a firearm; possession of a loaded firearm; pointing a firearm; extortion; uttering threats; and assault with a weapon.

Poony appeared in B.C. Provincial Court in Port Coquitlam on Tuesday for a bail hearing.
