SURREY – The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) announced that Surrey resident, Surinder Kaur Gill, pleaded guilty in Surrey Provincial Court on January 30, 2012 to failing to file her 2005 and 2007 personal income tax returns and the 2008 and 2009 corporate tax returns for her company, Ananak Windows Ltd.

Gill was fined $4,000 and given until March 1, 2012 to pay the fine. She was also ordered to file her 2005 and 2010 personal income tax returns and the 2009 and 2010 corporate tax returns for Ananak by March 1, 2012.

The preceding information was obtained from the court records.

When individuals are convicted of failing to file tax returns, in addition to any fines imposed by the courts, they must still file the returns and pay the full amount of taxes owing, plus interest owed, as well as any civil penalties that may be assessed by the CRA.

Individuals who have not filed returns for previous years, or who have not reported all of their income, can still voluntarily correct their tax affairs. They will not be penalized or prosecuted if they make a valid disclosure before they become aware of any compliance action being initiated by the CRA against them.  These individuals may only have to pay the taxes owing, plus interest.
