Kamloops Proclaims Nov. 28 Guru Nanak’s Birthday As “Know Your Neighbour Day”

KAMLOOPS –  The Mayor of Kamloops andCity Councillors joined the local Sikh community in proclaiming November 28 – Guru Nanak Devji’s birthdsy – as “Know Your Neighbour Day” in the interior BC city.

“When Sikhs meet they exchange the greeting “Sat Siri Akal” translated into English the greeting means “Truth is eternal” They remind each other of Guru Nanak’s Universal message ” Truth above all, above truth is truthful conduct”

“Another message from the Sikh scriptures is ” Na ko bairi nahe’ begana sagal Sang hum ko ban aiyee” This message of universality reminds us that there is no enemy none who is not our own. Relate to all us as our own.

“It is with this in mind, that members of this committee approached the City to proclaim, November 28, 2012, the birthday of Guru Nanak as ” Know your neighbour day”, said a press release from the community.

“We wish to thank you for declaring the proclamation,” said local Sikh community organizer Pyara S Lotay.

The community also marked the occasion with a lecture by Professor Emeritus Hugh Johnston, who spoke on Universality of Sikhism and diversity among Sikhs, Sikh presence in British Columbia and their contribution to the progress of the Province and Canada. Professor Johnston wrote the first book on the Kamagata Maru.
