William Andrew Whiteside, 22, is charged with second-degree murder of Alok Gupta, who was shot to death in North Surrey while covering for store owners on Christmas Day last year.

SURREY – A man has been charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of an Indian immigrant store clerk at a Surrey grocery store clerk on Christmas Day last year.

William Andrew Whiteside, 22, is charged with second-degree murder after Alok Gupta was gunned down at the store near 96th and 116th in Surrey during a string of shootings in the city during the holidays.

Gupta was filling in for the owners so they could spend the day together.

Homicide investigators unveiled the charge against Whiteside on Friday in Surrey.

The 27-year-old Gupta was manning the till at Ken’s Grocery, near 117B Street and 96 Avenue in Surrey, at around 4 p.m. on Dec. 25, 2011 when he was shot.

Paramedics found Gupta unconscious and made every effort to revive him, but he succumbed to his injuries.

“The victim of this homicide was working Christmas Day as a good deed to the owners who wished to celebrate Christmas together,” RCMP Sgt. Jennifer Pound said at the time.

“It’s beyond a tragedy when a good deed turns into the loss of someone’s life.”
