SURREY – Jasbir Sandhu, NDP MP forSurrey North, vows to continuedemanding that the federal governmentto take initiative and enter the discussionsabout the replacementof the aging Pattullo Bridge. The announcement comesin response to ongoing discussionsurrounding constructionof a tolled fourlanebridge.“Those who live or work inSurrey are disproportionallytargeted by tolled bridges. Itis not fair,” states Sandhu. The Port Mann Bridge andthe Golden Ears Bridge, both of whichfeed into Surrey, are the only tolledbridges west of Ontario. The Pitt RiverBridge, connecting Pitt Meadows andPort Coquitlam, built at the same timeas the Golden Ears, is not tolled becauseit received federal funding.Sandhu rues the fact: “Municipalities areexpected to be responsible for 60% ofinfrastructure development, while receiving only 8% of thetax base from the federal government. It is time that theConservative government paysattention to what is happeningoutside of Ottawa.”During the past year, Sandhuhosted two town halls to seekpublic consultation on the subject. He has spoken in parliamentnumerous times about funding for infrastructurein Surrey, and specificallyasked the Minister of Transport aboutthe reconstruction of the PattulloBridge.
