CALIFORNIA- The Ventura man who ran down and killed a bicyclist while driving drunk in 2011 was sentenced Wednesday to 15-years-life in prison.  50-year-old Satnam Singh had earlier pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the May 11, 2011 incident that claimed the life of 20-year-old Nick Haverland.  Haverland died while riding his bicycle to Ventura College.  Singh, whose blood alcohol tested .39 after the incident, ran Haverland down while driving his Hummer on Telegraph Road in east Ventura.  Singh also ran down two other bicyclists, injuring them.  He injured two other people when he ran into a car on the same stretch of road.  All the crashes happened within minutes of each other.  Singh fled to his nearby home where police caught up to him.  Wednesday’s sentencing happened in front of a packed courtroom, filled with family members and friends of both victim and defendant.  Many made emotional statements to the court before Singh was sentenced.  Singh must serve at least 85 percent of 15 years before he is even eligible to be consider for parole.  Parole in California is rare for people serving potential life sentences for murder convictions.
