Acting on a petition from theIncome Tax department which statedthat Amitabh Bachchan owes Rs.1.66 crores in taxes for his showKaun Banega Crorepati for the year2002-03, the Supreme Court todayissued a notice to the star.Readersmay recall that in July 2012, theBombay High Court had grantedrelief to Big B by dismissing theappeal filed by the ITCommissioner who had reopenedthe actor’s assessment proceedingsfor the year 2002-03.In the month of October 2002,Amitabh had filed returns declaringhis income to be Rs. 14.99 crore for2002-03.
Then, on, March 31′ 03, hefiled revised returns declaring histotal income for that year to be Rs8.11 crore. Even before the assessment’scompletion, he withdrew therevised returns. Post that, when theAssessing Officer determined BigB’s income at Rs 56.41 crore, Big Bwas issued a notice under Section147 of the IT Act seeking to reopenthe assessment proceedings for theyear 2002-03.
