Sukhvir Singh Badhesa appealed his sentence because a provincial court judge failed to consider how his mental illness impacted his state of intoxication when he committed the crimes and BC’s high court upheld the appeal, meaning Badhesa will serve a shorter sentence. He was initially ordered to spend more than 11 years in prison for manslaughter and assault causing bodily harm.

VANCOUVER – An Indo-Canadian man from Surrey who beat his mother to death and assaulted his wife in front of his daughters in March of 2016 will be allowed to leave prison sooner.

British Columbia’s highest court has upheld Sukhvir Singh Badhesa’s appeal of his sentence because a provincial court judge failed to consider how his mental illness impacted his state of intoxication when he committed the crimes.

He was initially ordered to spend more than 11 years in prison for manslaughter and assault causing bodily harm.

That sentence has now been reduced to 8 years.
