Surrey RCMP informed the public that two 16-year-old youth have been arrested from a residence located at 7700 block and 14o street in Surrey, in the ongoing investigation of shots fired at a residence in South Surrey.
On February 1, 2024, at approximately 1:21 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a report of shots fired at a residence in the 2800-block of 154 Street.
The police said no injuries were reported. Although police did not reveal any details regarding the shooting or the identity of the victim, BC Gurdwaras Council spokesperson Moninder Singh later identified the victim as Simranjit Singh, a close friend of slain Hardeep Singh Nijjar and a well-known member of Surrey Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.
Moninder informed the media that Simranjit’s active involvement in the Khalistan issue might be the reason he was targeted. “Simranjit has actively volunteered during Khalistan Referendums. Since he has no criminal record or related to any criminal activity, we are very sure in our minds that this shooting is not related to any gang war or extortion but it is political,” he said.
The police have yet to determine the motive behind the shooting.
Giving details of the arrest, Surrey RCMP said in a release, “On February 6, 2024, the Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit executed a search warrant on a residence in the 7700-block of 140 Street. Police seized three firearms and multiple electronic devices during the search. Two 16-year-old males from Surrey were arrested for careless use of a firearm and discharge a firearm with intent. The youths were released without charges at this time.”
Investigators continue to gather information, obtain witness statements and collect evidence to advance the investigation and determine the motive of this shooting.

“Surrey RCMP takes threats and acts of violence seriously and we work closely with victims to ensure their continued safety,” said Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Unit.
