Fiji Gets 2000 Domestic Violence Cases A Year

SUVA – Around two thousand cases of domestic violence are received by the Fiji Womens Crisis Centres every year. This is according to National Coordinator Shamima Ali who said this includes cases from first time and repeat clients at their centres around the country in which they receive about twenty cases every week.

Ali said however, sexual assault cases are under reported. She added that they have noticed with the various awareness on Domestic violence, there is more reporting to police. Police had earlier revealed that a 118 percent increase in crime against women has been recorded.

Furthermore, a 20 percent increase in crime against children was recorded in the last three months. The centre is currently holding their workshop on the Elimination of Violence against women. The workshop is being held in Suva.
