Indo-Canadian With Ontario Transport Agency Faces Corruption-Related Charges

The Ontario Provincial Police's corruption unit laid eight corruption- related charges against Ashish Deb, 47, on Thursday. Deb who was a former senior manager of Ontario's Transport agency Metrolinx, is being accused of allegedly receiving secret commissions and breaching the public's trust while working at the company in 2006 and 2007.

TORONTO -An Indo-Canadian, whowas a formersenior managerof Ontario’sTransport agencyMetrolinx, isbeing accused ofallegedly receivingsecret commissionsandbreaching thepublic’s trustwhile working atthe company in2006 and 2007,according to theO n t a r i oProvincial Police.The OPP’s corruptionunit laideight corruptionrelatedcharges against Ashish Deb, 47,on Thursday, reported Toronto Starnewspaper.Deb allegedly used “his position of trustto facilitate the hiring of contract servicesfor his employer while receiving secretcommissions between July 2006 andOctober 2007,” police said in a statement.A Metrolinx spokesperson said Deb wasfired in 2009 because of alleged “suspiciousactivities.””We reported it to the OPP,” said AnneMarie Aikins, adding the company hassince been fully cooperating with thepolice investigation.Aikins said she could not provide moredetails about Deb’s dismissal since thematter is before the courts.Aikins said Deb was hired by GOTransit’s IT department in 2006, and wasfired shortly after the company mergedwith Metrolinx. He was the manager ofNetwork Engineering at the time.Deb’s salary was more than $128,000during his last year at the company,according to Ontario’s Sunshine List.None of the allegations have beenproven in court.Deb could not be reached for comment.He is scheduled to appear in court onNov. 4.Metrolinx is a provincial crown agencythat coordinates transportation planningin the GTA.
