Kangna Ranaut has optedfor the unconventional yet again.However, this time it isn’t for arole. The actress has crossed overto ‘the other side’ of the cameraand has turned director. And no,she isn’t retiring from her actingcareer just yet.Sources reveal that theactress’ directorial debut is ashort film, written in collaborationwith an Australian writer.
The as-yet-untitled short (in postproduction)has been shot in LosAngeles with an all-Americancast and crew and deals with acomplex subject involving a dogand a four-year-old boy.Kangna said that the decisionto direct was well thoughtout and came to light “after meetingHollywood biggies duringone of my recent trips to LosAngeles.
And things just fell intoplace.”Kangna wanted to be wellprepared and held plenty ofworkshops and also delved a bitinto child psychology to helpconnect with the character of thekid in the film.She reveals, “It took sixmonths of thorough groundwork.I was advised not to workwith kids and animals, but myscript demanded it.
Kaden (theboy) is very little.We had to placehidden cameras, play games, andpretend to be aliens and trees inorder to get him in the frame(laughs)! But it was fun, he isadorable.The dog was well-trainedand not difficult to work with”.The actress further added,”We intend to send the film forinternational festivals, but as ofnow, I am concentrating on finishingthe editing and visualeffects.
That’s the only thing onmy mind before I leave for Parisfor my next acting schedule.”When asked, what she lovedmore — acting or directing —she replies, “This is like asking meto choose between apples andoranges… I love them both in aunique way…. But working withan international cast and crewwas an amazing experience.
“Kangna expressed gratitudeto her director friends back homewho gave her much-needed supportand constantly stayed intouch, encouraging her even asshe went about making the shortat the beginning of this month.Currently working on sixfilms with prestigious bannersand having tight schedules andback-to-back shifts, Kangna concluded,”Well, this has been anexperience that I will always cherish.”
