SANGRUR – An Australian woman and her brother have been booked for allegedly duping a Dhuri man of Rs 10 lakh.

Complainant Sunil Kumar, who runs a shop in Dhuri city, has alleged that before his marriage to Australian woman Shally, it was decided that he would pay Rs 20 lakh to her family.

Of the total, Rs 10 lakh was allegedly paid before marriage, while the remaining was to be paid after his getting Australia Permanent Residency. Their marriage was solemnised on December 11, 2016, and Shally went to Australia on May 5, 2017. However, she neither took Sunil there, nor returned his money.

Shopkeepers of Dhuri said both families belong to Dhuri town and got in touch through some locals.

Failing to get his money back, Sunil had lodged a complaint three months ago. After detailed investigation, the police registered a case against Shally and her brother Rupesh Kumar under Sections 420 and 120-B of the IPC last night.

“We have registered a case and conducting raids to arrest Rupesh,” said ASI Malkiat Singh.
