MANSA – A 28-year-old debt-ridden farmer from Burj Dhilwan village committed suicide Tuesday night. Gurjit Singh swallowed a poisonous substance in his fields.

Jagtar Singh, brother of the deceased, said Gurjit owned two acres of land and had taken 16 acres on contract. He said Gurjit’s cotton and wheat crops had suffered damage.

Unable to bear the burden of Rs 7-lakh debt which he owed to cooperative societies and banks, he took the extreme step, said his brother.
