Small groups of Sikh community and supporters of the Khalistan movement staged protests outside India’s diplomatic missions in Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa on Monday, a week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there may be a link between New Delhi and the murder of a Sikh separatist advocate in British Columbia.
Waving Canada and Khalistan flags and holding signs denouncing the Indian government and foreign interference, the Vancouver demonstration was staged atop a large flag of India placed on the wet ground. Vancouver police closed the 300 block of Howe Street in anticipation of the event, which took place amid a heavy police presence, CBC reported.
Global BC reported that there were dozens of protesters, along with around 25 police officers in the area.
Some protesters ripped up Indian flags before setting them on fire.
The World Sikh Organization of Canada urged Sikhs to remain vigilant and alert during the protests. WSO informed in a release, “Protests are planned by members of the Sikh community in cities across Canada for Monday September 25th including Toronto and Vancouver.  Recent developments have raised concerns about potential incitement, interference and conflict-provoking activities by the Government of India during these protests in order to cast a negative light on the Sikh community.”
The protest was held a week after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made stunning allegations linking India to the killing of Nijjar – who was shot dead in June outside a gurdwara in British Columbia, and triggered a massive diplomatic row. While India has dismissed Canada’s accusations calling it “absurd and motivated”, Trudeau’s move sparked a tit-for-tat action with each nation expelling diplomats.
Some of the protesters in both Toronto and Ottawa called for the expulsion of the Indian High Commissioner (ambassador) to Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma, who earlier said authorities have been informed of the protests and were providing security.
